Base Shoe Glass Railing: An Architectural Innovation
When it comes to architectural guardrails, there’s no choice more sophisticated than a glass railing. Glass railings are perfect for commercial interior or exterior guardrails, balconies, high rise rooftop decks, or stair applications. They offer a modern, elegant appearance and add value to any property, from multi-family apartment complexes to educational institutions.
This post focuses on our favorite type of glass railing – the Base Shoe Railing – an award winning system known for its durability and attractive appearance.
Aquaview’s Fully Frameless Base Shoe Railing offers fall protection without the need for any posts, providing a seamless unobstructed view. We use CR Laurence’s 8B aluminum base shoe (Architectural Records 2014 product winner) and patented dry glaze Taper-Loc system. This glass railing system has been tested and approved by structural engineers to withstand a concentrated load of 200lbs and uniform load of 50plf. It is our strongest system available, perfect for high-wind zones and balconies.
Our railing system is available in either ½” thick tempered glass or 9/16” laminated glass to meet respective building codes. Base shoe cladding is available in Brushed Stainless, Polished Stainless, or Black-Bronze to match the existing décor. Cap railings are also available in matching finishes, in addition to our custom wood top rail.
The base shoe can be surface or fascia mounted to a variety of substrates. Costs are reduced for the customer thanks to the innovative dry-glaze Taper Loc system, which allows for quick and easy installation (up to 50% faster than wet-glaze installations!).

Project Spotlight: Glass Railing at DJ Khaled’s Miami Home
DJ Khaled is an American DJ who is well known in the music industry. His waterfront Miami home is the definition of luxury. Situated in a high-end Miami area, this sizeable remodeled home features an open floor plan, private movie theater, floating staircases, and vast windows. The beautiful outdoor area includes a massive swimming pool, courtyard, and gazebo hangout. Along the water is a boat slip for his treasured jet skis and boat, making this quite the outdoor paradise.
The boat slip’s perimeter is lined with our fully frameless glass railing system. This modern design is fascia mounted to conserve the maximum size of the area while adding a secure boundary.
The additional top cap rail ties the overall piece together, finished with a dark oil rubbed bronze color. Our signature frameless gate system offers self-closing and self-latching properties, allowing for easy and secure access onto the boat slip.
This fully frameless railing system is perfect for this waterfront mansion, allowing for unobstructed picturesque views. In addition, its strategic design is engineered as a safety barrier between the property and the open water, allowing for his young son Asahd to safely play outdoors.
